It appears that Science tells us there could be a clue to helping us build deeper trust relationships and a host of other boosts to our wellbeing in our professional and personal lives if we take heed of that old fun kid’s song “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands”.
Put simply, people who broadcast their genuine positivity and happy disposition, tend to attract other positive people into their lives, as well as, boost the level of positivity in others around them.
So what you might ask?
Michelle Gielan’s book “Broadcasting Happiness” is an evidence-based book that can add to our knowledge on how to get the most out of our lives. Michelle lists a range of research studies that provide strong evidence of the value to be gained by ensuring whatever method of communication you use, make sure it has more positive overtones than it does negative.
I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of ‘happyology’, but if we look beyond what might seem to be a focus on just ‘happiness’ and focus more on what we can learn about our potential to improve our overall wellbeing, there’s a lot of positive benefits that we can draw from this evidence-based research.
I’m pretty sure you’d agree, regardless of the science, that being around genuinely positive people (and I do emphasise genuinely positive) lifts the mood of others around them, which we also know from science that the more “up” a person is, the more engaged they are in what they do, and the more likely it is that this leads to increased productivity and the speed with which that productivity is achieved.
Here’s a simple exercise to check in on if you’re personally broadcasting positively; have a quick check through the last week’s emails you’ve sent out. Look for the balance between ‘good news’ and ‘bad news’ that you’re conveying.
Now, what the science isn’t suggesting is that you stop broadcasting bad news.
Let’s face it, bad news is bad news and it still needs to be broadcast, but based on what science is suggesting, we need to be asking ourselves how well are we positioning the “ok, here’s the bad news… and here’s how we’re going to make the best of this situation”.
Don’t get this mixed up with just trying to put positive spins on negative situations. This is about recognising the importance of self-determination… the degree to which each of us believes while we can’t control what happens to us, we can control what we do about it.
