Living a ‘good life’ means more than just happiness! In this video series I’ve selected from 101 keywords and discuss how each word can impact your potential to live a more happy, flourishing and prosperous personal and work life.

This is keyword #030 – Defend

One of the innate drivers of human beings is to defend their position, their beliefs, their decisions, their actions, their possessions and their relationships (just to name a few). There is a wonderful strength and integrity about the innate drive to defend.

There is also a dark side to the drive to defend.  When new ideas, new possibilities, new opinions, new perspectives and new opportunities come your way, your mental boundaries within which you make all decisions may block you from seeing, hearing or accepting anything different to what you expect or is outside of your belief system.

One of the inescapable truths for a prosperous life is to develop a thirst for intentional learning and one of the characteristics of a life long learner is to be open to new ideas and aware of when you might be potentially blocking, filtering or defending in ways that will prevent you from the possibilities that new ideas bring.

Let me finish today’s message with a quote from the Roman poet Ovid who wrote…..

“Happy are those who dare courageously to defend what they love.”
