Living a ‘good life’ means more than just happiness! In this video series I’ve selected from 101 keywords and discuss how each word can impact your potential to live a more happy, flourishing and prosperous personal and work life.
This is keyword #041 – Engagement.
In a busy, time pressured world it can become easy to be distracted during conversations with others and to not be truly engaged in dialogue. When you are engaged in dialogue you are beyond a mere passing conversation. You have established a mutual purpose that you both want to achieve. You are respecting each other and you are both providing the information required for total understanding of the topic at hand and the outcomes expected.
While all of these elements may not be required for every conversation, regardless of whether the situation is work or personal, what is required is your personal and intentional attention to the person you’re speaking with.
To be engaged in each and every conversation you have starts with your intentional attention to the person you’re speaking with. Listen to what they’re saying and be there for them in that moment. When you find yourself wandering in your mind traffic and perhaps not listening as well as you could have, own up, apologise for being distracted, and get back onto intentional attention and the engagement you have in your everyday conversations will grow to an incredibly powerful, productive and personally rewarding level for both you and those you interact with in your life roles.
When you do this, you build more personal belief about your truth about you and this leads to you living a happy, flourishing and prosperous life.
Another of my mentors over the past decades has been the work of Brian Tracy who I’ve met a couple of times when he has visited Australia, and I personally love this quote from him….
“The glue that holds all relationships together is trust.”
