This book is about creating the conditions for Optimal Experiences where we become ‘in flow’ as the title of the book suggests. My favourite quote from the book is “Happiness in fact, is condition that must be prepared for, cultivated, and defended privately by each person. People who learn to control inner experience will be able to determine the quality of their lives, which is as close as any of us can come to being happy.”
The basic premise is that the more we understand that it is our ability to interpret and gain value from our experiences that we plan for and pursue (‘the quality of our experiences’) and that the happiness we can gain from being ‘in flow’ will far outweigh our feelings of happiness we gain from riches, fame and the like.
Most importantly Csikszentmihalyi outlines what we need to do to be ‘in flow’ – a well worthwhile read and an even more important approach on how to pursue happiness, to flourish and to prosper.
